Many other contractors take advantage of the desire to save money by tricking the customer with a deceptively low bid, when in reality, they're the most costly choice.  One reason the seemingly cheap quote costs more is because they plan to bump up the cost once they have your business. Eric Whipp has seen this too. "They leave something out of the original bid to seem like the cheapest, but then charge you for it later and you end up paying more than if you'd chosen an honest bidder from the start."

The other way that cheapest bid is really the most expensive is that the company has come in lower because they're using inferior materials and doing slap-dash, shoddy workmanship to save on their labor costs. Not only are they not delivering value for the money, but it's going to be expensive for you to repair once the flaws become known.

Eric tells us, "That's because decent materials cost the same, and trained employees cost the same, so someone that's quoting a lot less is short changing you somehow.  They use cheap PVC pipe in your irrigation and it's going to break later. Or they don't bury the irrigation deep enough so it gets damaged when you roto-till or aerate the lawn. They don't reinforce the concrete so that the natural hairline cracks that all concrete develops lead to shifting and buckling. The landscape lighting they install is a do-it-yourself system from Home Depot at on-third of what it should cost, but you have to throw it away in 2 to 3 years when the wiring breaks instead of lasting 20 years like it should."

Work done right the first time actually costs less by not having to be re-done or repaired, and lasting many times longer than those installations done using short cuts.  And Eric Whipp can be certain that's exactly how all work at Landscape Technologies is done because he as the owner, works alongside his crew on every job, unlike other companies that convince customers by the experience of the owner, but then the work is really performed by less skilled crew without the owner's direct supervision.
