Fine Art Of Carpentry Company ProfileToo many contractors are really just out to make a quick buck off you instead of caring about doing quality work and building a good reputation. Because it's so hard to find one you can genuinely trust, when you do, you consider yourself lucky given all the potential problems that are immediately avoided.
That's exactly what customers say of the Sonoma County firm Fine Art of Carpentry in Rohnert Park CA which for 20 years has been serving the North Bay with home improvements, repairs, and remodeling. Fine Art of Carpentry is owned by Danny Hilario, a builder with 34 years of experience and who values his good reputation more than making money.
Fine Art of Carpentry in Rohnert Park CA: The Value of Honor
You won't know it, but many contractors have little or no construction experience and merely took the licensing exam as a get rich quick scheme so they can get contracts, then pay a subcontractor to do the whole project and pocket the difference. Not only do they rob you of the decision of who you really want doing the work but naturally they choose the cheapest, riskiest subcontractors possible in order to maximize their profits. Even contractors who do have years in the building trade often have the same "fast buck" approach to the business.
Fine Art of Carpentry owner Danny Hilario has heard of this too. "I saw a seminar once where the speaker was literally flashing a wad of cash, and telling a room full of car salesman and grocery store workers they can get rich quick by getting a contractor's license and don't even have to know anything about building."
In contrast, Danny Hilario has been a builder for over 34 years, founded Fine Art of Carpentry in Sonoma County in 1992, and has built a loyal following of grateful customers since then. One reason is his honesty. He explains, "I insist on giving customers a copy of all invoices for the materials used on their project and they can see for themselves that I haven't marked up the price the way others do." Why doesn't Danny keep that information to himself and markup the prices like so many others get away with? He answers, "I'd rather keep my reputation than make money. My dad taught me that reputation is more important and I've lived my life that way ever since."
Where other contractors are content to take shortcuts, knowing you can't see them, Danny does the right thing by his clients even when they can't tell. "On a remodel if we find something has rotted, we'll replace the whole thing," says Danny. "If I open a wall and see a header that's wrong, I'll put the right one up rather than leave it how it is." According to Danny he does this where others don't because he has the long term in mind rather than a quick buck. "Most of my clients are repeat clients or ones referred to me by friends and family. And that's because they still feel good about the job I did for them long after it's finished because it holds up. So it's worth it to me in the long run to do things the right way for clients because then they hire me for future projects and recommend me to others." And this was borne out by the customers we spoke to for this article. One named Julie said, "Danny has done many jobs for me and we continue using him. He does a fabulous job." Another named Sarah told us, "Danny built my house. We have used him on many occasions and so has my family. He helped my dad with his house in the mountains and my sister's house at the beach. Our house is 10 years old now and we have not had any issues."
Problems Get Solved by Fine Art Carpentry in Sonoma County
Fine Art of Carpentry specializes in residential and Danny Hilario loves solving the challenges that come with custom work as he has the eye for detail that's required of his demanding customers in Sonoma and Marin County communities like Tiburon, Mill Valley and Belvedere. He gives the example of a recently completed job in Stinson Beach. "The house was built in 1950 and the wood siding was rotted and popping off because water could get in behind it. But the owner wanted to keep the original look so I had siding materials made since there was nothing like it in stock in the exact dimensions. Then we were to put on a new roof but found that the existing roof was not originally built to plan. Much of the framing had termite damage and dry rot so we replaced it and made the house more stable. We upgraded the wiring, plumbing, and insulated the walls. Now the owners love it. They say the house feels a lot warmer, more solid, and like brand new." That strong work ethic and can-do attitude when it comes to solving problems was reflected in what was told to us by a customer named Doug who we spoke to for this article. He said, "Danny is terrific. He's honest, hardworking and gets the job done. I highly recommend him!"
Danny Hilario lives in Rohnert Park CA with his wife of 33 years. He comes from a family of music lovers and plays bass, keyboard, and guitar with his favorites being jazz or rock and roll. Friends and family say that Danny is giving, has a big heart and is always quick to help you out. Customers know him as proven trustworthy and honest, with many of them giving him the keys to the house to do a remodel or repair while they're out of town.
So if finding that rare contractor with a strong sense of personal honor, one that you can trust completely, trust not to overcharge you, trust to do work right even when you're not watching, and trust to have the expertise to get you exactly what you want in your repair or remodel makes you lucky, then customers of Fine Art of Carpentry and Danny Hilario consider themselves extremely lucky. As one customer named Ann told us for this article, "Danny is wonderful. He does beautiful work. He's a real craftsman and really honest and honorable. So I would recommend him unreservedly. You'd be lucky to get him."
