The skylight craze of the late 70s-early 80s saw many fly-by-night skylight installers take advantage of the trend. It seemed that houses all over Southern California were having fiberglass domes placed atop their homes. By the late 80s, Charlie Ford - a master-roofer with over 30 years experience, noticed that many customers were calling him after experiencing problems with their roofs that someone else installed. There were inexplicable leaks in newer roofs. People complained of noise and obvious changes in temperature. Upon further investigation, Charlie quickly realized the source of the mystery leaks: shoddy installation and cheap skylights.

He found himself repairing and replacing many of these existing skylights, integrating his knowledge of roofing systems and general contractor experience.

"Skylights are a great feature to a house but they must be done right," Charlie Ford says. "People think they can just trust anyone to come, cut a small hole in their roof, install one, seal it and go. When it comes to leaks and other improper installs, the cheapest companies are the worst offenders."

This customer demand for repairs and replacements led to the addition of the skylight division at Octagon Roofing.

"I've seen how sometimes those bad skylight jobs will collect so much condensation that moisture spreads through the beams. That causes warping of the roof, ceilings, even mold that makes you sick."

Charlie Ford grew up in the business, going on out on jobs starting at age 6 with his general contractor father. Today he lives Sylmar CA with his wife and together they've raised two daughters. When Charlie isn't replacing or repairing skylights, he relaxes by fishing on a calm lake.
