Non-Profit Cage-Free Sanctuary

The mission of the San Fernando Valley non-profit Heaven on Earth cat sanctuary in Van Nuys CA is to improve quality of life for homeless animals, especially those who are often overlooked because of special needs and low potential for adoption. Because every life is precious accoding to Heaven on Earth staff, every single one.  The sanctuary provides shelter to dozens of cats and kittens with no place else to go.

Some are temporary residents until that forever home comes along. For others-those who aren't eventually adopted—Heaven on Earth is their home.

In Van Nuys CA, the cat sanctuary Heaven on Earth typically has 70-80 cats and kittens in residence, each with a hand-picked name. They receive quality food, medical care and lots of love in a clean, cheerful environment. Cages are used only for cats in isolation (e.g. new intakes) or recovering from a medical procedure.

Cats come to this non-profit cat sanctuary from three main sources. Some are saved from the euthanasia list at city shelters through their participation in Los Angeles Animal Services' New Hope Program. Others are brought to Heaven on Earth cat sanctuary by people who've found strays and can't care for them; still others come from rescue groups who have taken in a cat or kitten with special needs but can't meet those needs without a facility like Heaven on Earth.

Adoption Program

All of their cats and kittens are available for adoption. Heaven on Earth has staff at the Van Nuys Petco on most Saturday afternoons with several adorable adoptables, and they're available by appointment at the sanctuary at other times. They also participate in various large-scale adoption events held during the year throughout the greater Los Angeles area.

Prospective adopters are thoroughly screened and all known information about the cat is shared to ensure an ideal match for all concerned, two-legged and four-legged alike. Every cat or kitten adopted from Heaven on Earth has been spayed or neutered, vaccinated and tested for FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) and FeLV (feline leukemia virus).

No-Kill Mission Statement

The mission of Heaven on Earth Society for Animals is to improve the quality of life for homeless animals, particularly those who are often overlooked because of special needs and low potential for adoption. Heaven on Earth fulfills that mission by:

Placing homeless animals into permanent homes through their own adoption program and through collaborating with other humane organizations; Providing lifelong care for animals with low potential for adoption at their cageless sanctuary; and Decreasing the number of homeless animals in the local spay/neuter program and by providing information to the public on the importance of having their pets sterilized and referrals to assist them in doing so.

Heaven on Earth Society for Animals believes that every life is precious. So they are committed to doing all they can to help bring an end to the killing of healthy cats and dogs, including feral cats, as well as those who are sick or injured but could regain their health with appropriate medical intervention.

They also embrace The Declaration of the No Kill Movement in the United States, and they envision the day when there are no more homeless pets and when every newborn companion animal can be guaranteed a safe and loving life.

Heaven on Earth Cat Sanctuary: Their Beginnings

Founded in early 2000 by long-term rescuer Eri Kriteman, Heaven on Earth began with a goal that still resonates today—to address the overpopulation crisis by helping end the senseless suffering and destruction of homeless animals. They set about developing an adoption program and focused other volunteer efforts on spay/neuter services.

Then came a phone call.

It was about five kittens, the only survivors at a plumbing supply lot where falling pipes had claimed their siblings' lives. They were feral, so no one else would take them in. They were afraid of people, so their chances of adoption were slim. But they were five little lives who deserved a chance to be safe, healthy and loved.

Joey, Sarah, Smokey, Abercrombie and Ringo became the first five residents of Heaven on Earth cat sanctuary . All the others who've followed owe their lives to these furry trailblazers. Presently Heaven on Earth servescats and kittens only but explains that their hearts embrace all homeless animals and they intend that as their resources grow, their scope will as well.

People give their support in any of the following ways: adopting, volunteering, sponsoring an individual cat, or a tax-deductible donation of funds or supplies.
